Looking for a long wearing, crazy pigmented and affordable lipcolour?
Let me introduce you to the Maybelline Color Drama Velvet Lip Pencil
These newly released pencils are running off the shelves and for good reason and I was lucky to have recieved all of the shades to show you!
There are ten shades of vibrant and pigmented pencils and the formula is creamy, comfortable on the lips and exceptionally long wearing. The colours range from pink and brown based nudes, fiery reds and bright pinks.
Personally I found that most of the shades in these pencils rivaled some of my favourite high end pencils (im looking at you Nars Velvet lip pencils) at a much lower price point ($9.95)
The packaging is compact (they look really cute and chubby next to some other lip pencils) but the “lead” part of the pencil is quite thick. The only thing I can fault with these pencils is that they are a wooden pencil that will need sharpening and I much prefer a product that you can wind up. This is simply because I seem to butcher them with sharpeners no matter how hard I try to keep it pretty.
The dark shades of the Maybelline Color Drama Velvet Lip Pencils are amazingly creamy and pigmented. Some of them have that super pigmented formula similar to MAC amplified lipsticks but are slightly drier and I think more long wearing in formula. If you have dry lips then I really suggest you apply a lip balm underneath before blotting your lips and applying the Velvet lip color.
Red essential is as the name suggests a beautiful classic red. It looks a lot like my Revlon certainly red. The finish is not 100 percent matte but this may be because I applied balm underneath. This shade was worn all day and withstood wear and tear and at the end of the day was still stained on my lips. This shade is one of my favourites.
Berry much is similar to MAC rebel but slightly less pink, it’s a gorgeous deep but not too vampy shade which I will make lots of use of during the winter months. This one had slightly more shine than some of the others but it could be because it is darker and reflects more light. Love this one!
See what I mean about pigment? In with coral is basically opaque at one swipe. It’s not a shade I would usually wear but if you like the neon corals then you will love this one. This one is super soft and can get a little messy around the edges because it is so pigmented.
Light it up is a brighter red than red essential and is really pretty. I found this one to be a little drier than the rest but was certainly not uncomfortable. As with the others the pigment is incredible and rich. I know I’ve said this already but I love this shade!
Fab Orange is another one that is super charged with pigment. Here is a tip! It’s a dupe for MAC Lady Danger with a slightly more soft formula (not as dry) I found that this orange based red made my teeth look really white. Gorgeous!
In my opinion the pinks didn’t have as much wow factor as the darker shades above. They’re still great shades and most have the same lovely formula but my personal preference had me reaching for the reds over and over again.
Pink so chic is more of a deep berry shade than a pink and is one of the more sheer shades (but isn’t actually sheer.. It’s just not as pigmented as the others). This is a great swipe and go colour and would look great on all skin tones.
Nude perfection is your brown based nude. Brown nude lovers will love it. It’s highly pigmented and won’t wash you out with “concealer lips” It’s the perfect nude for light to medium skin tones and provides that sought after 90s lip look that is so popular.
Minimalist is your pink based nude and was my least favourite shade simply because unlike the others is seemed to have silver sheen in it. When I wiped it off the silver bits stuck to my lips. It also was less pigmented than the others. It’s not a bad product but doesn’t compare to the other shades.
Fuchsia desire is the brightest of the pinks and is very wearable and pretty. Again it doesn’t have the punch that the reds have but is still a great shade and is long wearing and creamy.
Love my pink is another one of the super charged pigmented shades. It’s opaque and creamy and is a midtoned pink.
I really recommend you try these Maybelline Color Drama Velvet Lip Pencils. At the time of publishing Priceline has a maybelline promotion of buy 3 for 2 so it’s an excellent opportunity to try out a few shades and find which one you love best.
