Spotlight on.. Burts Bees

Burt’s Bees is a brand that I have only recently become more familiar with. In the past I had bought a couple of products (lip balms mainly) but wasn’t aware of the wide range of skincare and cosmetics products produced by this US based company. I recently purchased the Burt’s Bees Lemon Butter Cuticle Cream on a whim and have since become absolutely hooked on it (bye bye gross cracked cuticles!)

So when i was kindly sent a range of other products to review I was pretty excited.

Burt’s Bees are an environmentally and socially conscious company who care about more than just the bottom line. In fact they are so concerned with the “greater good” that they refuse to put “badies” in their products just for the sake of reducing overheads and increasing profits.

Many of Burt’s Bees products are touted as 99% natural (1% being synthetic preservatives) and are paraben and sulfate free. About half of the products are made of 100% naturally derived ingredients.

But this means nothing if the products dont stand alone in terms of performance and quality. So here are some thoughts on some of the products I was sent

The Burt’s Bees Radiance Body Lotion (19.99) is a nourishing body lotion with a little bit something special included. That special ingredient is nothing other than crushed natural mica which gives your skin a bit of sparkle when it hits the light. This lotion is perfect for smothering all over your arms and legs before an evening out for a subtle shimmer and glow without chunky glitter or orange limbs from too much bronzer. Be sure to wash your hands after use as the mica particles will stick to your hands after application and you might find that you get in trouble from your husband for leaving glittery finger prints all over the leather interior of your car… but i digress.

The Lemon Butter Cuticle Cream ($14.99) smells amazing. Seriously amazing. Its fairly hard in the pan but once you swirl on the surface the warmth of your fingers melts a little product. The cuticle butter gives immediate results when applied to your finger tips, cuticles instantly look more hydrated and dryness and imperfections are smoothed away. With regular use i have found that i experience less “hang nails” and my cuticles look less raggedy and split.

The product i was most familiar with was the Burt’s Bees Replenishing Lip Balm ($6.99) While the lipbalms have always been great i love that they have included a range of flavoured (and ever so slightly tinted) balms in varieties such as Coconut and Pear, Pink Grapefruit and Pommegranate (pictured) The balms are less on the buttery, slippery side and are more waxy and leave a thinner layer of product on your lips, theyre perfect for creating a barrier against cold, wind and salt water.

The items that excited me most were the cosmetic items such as the Lip Crayons ($16.99) I was not expecting them to be quite as richly pigmented or smooth as they were. Napa Vineyard in particular turned out to be a perfect rich red. Despite the description the lipcrayons aren’t exactly matte in their finish but more of a satin finish. I cant express how much i loved this shade.

All in all Burt’s Bees seem to have a little something for everyone with a range of eco friendly products which perform brilliantly and are at a fairly reasonable price point.
