David Deans skincare. Review and Giveaway!
Natural, small scale and locally made are key phrases that get thrown around in both the food and beauty industries quite often as hoards of socially and environmentally aware consumers are deciding to turn away from the mass produced, corporatized world of chemical filled, genetically modified products that seem to have become the norm and move to a more sustainable and health beneficial lifestyle.
If you’re a regular reader you will know that I do my best to exclusively use naturally derived and sulphate and paraben free products in my skincare routine. These types of products are best for my skin but also fit in with my lifestyle choices.
So when I was approached by the people behind the hand made skincare brand David Deans to trial and review their products I jumped at the opportunity to try something new and locally produced.
So I found myself one Saturday morning sitting in the waiting room of the newly refurbished Natural Beauty Clinic in the western suburbs of Sydney to familiarise myself with the products and experience one of their signature facials.
Once in the treatment room my skin was assessed and a personalised skincare treatment was arranged for me. What happened next is hard to describe as once I closed my eyes and started to relax things started to get fuzzy. While the blogger in me kept trying to come to the surface so that I could record all my experiences, the overtired and stressed from an exceptionally long week at work part of me just wanted to switch off and float away as my face was pampered with product.
Oatmeal mask doing its magic! |
Having said that the treatment that really stood out was the application of the Antioxidant Oatmeal Mask which was covered with a liquid rubber mask which hardened and helped to push the product into the skin and maximise the softening effect of the mask. While feeling a little strange the Oatmeal based mask felt nourishing and moisturising on the skin and my skin was glowing afterwards.
When the pampering session was over I was so excited to take home three products to trial at home.
1. The Soul Serum
This unassuming bottle of clear watery liquid is touted to be a power source of Vitamin C, a substance which is thought to have multiple benefits for the skin. One of the most powerful functions of vitamin C is its role in the production of collagen, which is a protein that help give your skin its elasticity, as we age collagen level decreases and our skin doesn’t have the ability to bounce back, can stretch and sag and eventually form wrinkles. As someone who is starting to see the formation of fine lines around the eyes I wanted to bathe in this stuff.
The Soul Serum is kept in the fridge to help the 20% Vitamin C solution stay active and stop it from spoiling. The serum is cooling and soothing to the skin and feels great when applied as part of the skin care routine. There is a slight tingle there but is more than comfortable on the skin. Its really hard to say that I have seen a marked improvement in my skin elasticity as these things really take time and its only been a few weeks of use.
My only criticism of this product is that it does need to be kept in the fridge and not with my other skin care and so I have on occasion forgotten to use it daily.
2. Enhance Eye Repair
As I have already mentioned I have started to see some minor lines around the eyes over the past 12 months and so was really happy to receive this Eye Repair cream. The cream is smooth and pleasant and leaves the skin around my eyes feeling fresh and looking plumper ready for the application of my makeup. I have been using it twice a day for a few weeks and have found that it has been taking less product to cover the bags and circles under my eyes.
This cream contains Argireline which is supposedly the strongest, non injectable wrinkle ingredient on the market (yes please) it also contains antioxidents and collagen boosting ingredients like the serum. You can read more about the claims of the product here.
3. Antioxidant Oatmeal mask
By far my favourite product has been the Oatmeal mask. I have been using this twice a week as a treat for my skin. I find that the product makes my skin so so soft in the mornings and doesn’t make my skin feel tight or stripped of moisture like some clay based masks often do. Obviously I don’t have the rubber mask to place on top of the product like in the salon but I use it my massaging it onto damp skin and leaving it for 15 minutes while I get ready for my evening shower and bed.
The mask is quite runny out of the tube and smells slightly acidic (almost vinegar like) You can see small traces of oatmeal in the solution. I find that this mask is very soothing and helps calm my skin down and has even helped me when i had a recent bout of peri oral dermatitis. If you were to only get one product from this line this is the one I would recommend.
I was so impressed with the service and the products, but what really surprised and impressed me was that all the David Deans products were not only natural and hand-made but that they were hand made in an industrial style lab on the premises of The Natural Beauty Clinic. Its such a great find; an 100% Australian owned and operated business creating great products that are safe and effective!
